Houston SPCA is hiring a Director of Development to deepen donor relationships and grow contributed revenue across individual, corporate, foundation, and planned giving. Reporting to the Vice President of Philanthropy, this role advances donors beyond direct response into sustained, mission-aligned engagement.

Role Summary

The Director of Development manages a personal portfolio and leads strategies that cultivate, solicit, and steward mid-level, major, planned, and corporate donors. The leader partners closely with direct marketing, marketing and communications, database and donor services, and finance to deliver a seamless donor experience and accountable fundraising operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and grow a portfolio of mid-level, major gift, and planned giving prospects with consistent, strategic outreach.
  • Conduct face-to-face visits, donor tours, and other high‑touch cultivation activities; implement individualized stewardship plans with timely follow‑up.
  • Partner with the Senior Director of Direct Marketing to transition annual donors into higher‑level portfolios and align messaging across touchpoints.
  • Lead cultivation and solicitation of corporate sponsorships and philanthropic partnerships, including support for the Howl‑O‑Ween Ball and other signature events; strengthen sponsor and attendee relationships for continued support.
  • Advance planned giving initiatives in collaboration with marketing and legal resources; maintain regular contact with prospects and ensure appropriate recognition (e.g., legacy societies).
  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications on proposals, stewardship reports, and impact stories; coordinate with Database & Donor Services for accurate records, coding, and reporting.
  • Develop and track portfolio metrics, donor retention, and revenue growth; provide regular updates to the Vice President of Philanthropy.
  • Manage departmental resources and budgets; contribute to annual income and expenditure planning and establish measurable goals with data‑driven evaluation.
  • Supervise and develop team members, including hiring, training, coaching, recognition, and performance management; ensure timely acknowledgments and uphold data integrity and reconciliation with finance.

Ideal Profile

  • Proven success cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding mid‑level, major, and planned gifts with a portfolio‑management approach.
  • Experience securing corporate sponsorships and managing donor engagement around events and campaigns.
  • Skilled collaborator across marketing, data/CRM, and finance; committed to accurate reporting and donor database integrity.
  • Analytical orientation with the ability to set goals, track KPIs, and communicate progress to leadership.
  • Team leadership experience, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance management within a fundraising or development environment.

Compensation And Location

Job Type: Full‑time

Location: Houston, TX

Salary Range: USD $118,052–$142,888 (annual)
