San Diego State University (SDSU) is hiring a Science and Research Writer and Media Relations Officer to elevate the visibility of its $229.8 million research enterprise. This full-time role sits within Strategic Communications and Public Affairs (StratComm) and focuses on translating complex research into clear, compelling stories while managing media engagement around faculty-led initiatives and university priorities.

SDSU is a newly designated R1 research university and part of the California State University system. As the official voice of the university, the StratComm team leads integrated storytelling across SDSU NewsCenter, social media, web, video, and flagship publications, and manages media relations and executive communications. The department partners closely with the Office of the President, the Division of Research and Innovation, and academic leaders to advance SDSU’s mission, reputation, and community impact. Role Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Media Relations, you will research, write, and pitch science and research stories for SDSU channels and external media. The role primarily supports the Colleges of Health and Human Services and Engineering while contributing to university-wide initiatives. You will serve as a media relations lead for science topics, collaborate across campus, support issues and crisis communications, and contribute to multimedia storytelling. The position is approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work in San Diego.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, write, and pitch science and research stories for SDSU NewsCenter, SDSU Magazine, social, and external media.
  • Serve as media relations lead for research topics, coordinating interviews and preparing spokespeople.
  • Draft press releases, advisories, statements, and messaging aligned with university priorities and style guidelines.
  • Build and maintain relationships with reporters and editors at regional, national, and international outlets.
  • Collaborate with StratComm, the Office of the President, the Division of Research and Innovation, and academic deans on integrated strategies.
  • Contribute to multimedia storytelling, including short-form video, photo content, and social integration.
  • Support crisis and issues communications involving research and academic topics.
  • Engage in professional development and serve on communications initiatives and committees as needed.

Ideal Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree (journalism, communications, English, related fields, or sciences) or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years writing about science, research, or technology; journalism/PR/communications experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret scientific data and present it clearly for general audiences.
  • Proven storytelling that humanizes research for donors, policymakers, and community stakeholders.
  • Experience promoting research at a university or similar institution; strong writing and verbal skills required.

Compensation And Benefits

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position designated exempt under FLSA. Salary is based on experience and qualifications within budget and equity guidelines.

  • CSU Classification Range: $4,842–$8,759/month; hiring salary not expected to exceed $5,994/month.
  • Generous time off, including 15 paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave.
  • Retirement through CalPERS with retiree healthcare and reciprocity with other CA public systems (including UC).

  • CSU tuition fee waiver for employees and eligible dependents.

Location, Schedule, And Work Type

  • Location: San Diego, CA; approved for partial telecommuting with onsite work as scheduled.
  • Work hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (may vary by operational needs).
  • Exempt position; not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Background check required; position designated as a mandated reporter under California law.
  • SDSU does not sponsor staff/management visas; applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis.
